Safe Haven
Angela Ferguson
A safe haven in a sea of change
Delightful sounds over the ocean’s rage,
Those are the things I miss.

A lighthouse tower on the cliff,
Ivy climbing up in wisps
Those are the things I waste

Every beginning is an end
Every end is a beginning
Does spring turn summer into fall?
Or is autumn spring’s dawn after all?
When safety changes, I fold
I refuse to shiver in the cold
And when the heat waves come
I wear a jacket to keep me warm

When safety changes, I hide
I try to find peace with my hands tied
I break down trying to break free
But I can’t shake what’s holding me

When safety changes, I run
Is golden hour from wildfire or the sun?
Smoke billows from my white picket fence
I’ll be caught dead before caught in suspense

And yet
Safety changed anyway

My safe haven burned to the ground
But there’s so many more I’ve found
In all the people homeward-bound
My new safe haven is all around.
